Aphrodisiacs are substances believed to be able to stimulate erotic desire and improve sexual performance. The term derives from the name of an aphrodisiac Greek goddess of love: Aphrodite. Always used as “love potions”, these substances varies greatly according to cultural traditions of different countries, from honey ginseng, ginger from the strychnine until the oysters and rhinoceros horns. It should be made, however, a dutiful premise: in most cases, there are substances in which this effect has been demonstrated aphrodisiac (must also be remembered that for many of these there is a high level of toxicity as alcohol, cocaine or marijuana) , because, theoretically, any type of product can produce the desired effect if a person strongly believes. The only real effect it has is the improvement of blood circulation which is directly reflected on the physiological responses of sexual organs.

The aphrodisiac substances – Among the best known types of aphrodisiacs is reported cantharidin, which is nothing other than the powder obtained after drying of the species of insects Lytta vesicatoria. Cantharidin can irritate the lining of the bladder and urethra, reaching in some cases to cause cases of priapism with persistent erection. This substance, together with strychnine, is considered one of the most dangerous to human health, to the point that if used in excessive doses can even cause death to arrive.

Well known are the effects of alcohol, cocaine and marijuana, substances that are not used for therapeutic purposes is still to be highly toxic because of their erratic and mainly psychic action, that is linked to a very specific mindset the individual. The main effect of these drugs is to stimulate the central nervous system to depress him, thus eliminating inhibitions and provoking a psychological effect of high sexual desire. The main effect of these drugs is to stimulate the central nervous system to depress him, thus eliminating inhibitions and provoking a psychological effect of strong sexual desire, even if, for example, is well known that a high level of alcohol in the blood can determine the effect opposite to that desired, coming to cause a sharp decline in sexual performance.

Other substances used for their supposed aphrodisiac effects are some alkaloids derived from bark of tropical trees (eg quebrachina and yohimbine), these alkaloids are also used in the therapeutic area. Affect mainly the sacral cord and parasympathetic centers, increasing the reflex excitability and, in the case of yohimbine, resulting in vasodilation in the pelvic area of the district. This substance should be strictly avoided by people with liver or kidney problems. Among the alleged aphrodisiacs herbal ginseng should also remember, (we would like to emphasize the alleged term, there are indeed scientific evidence of effectiveness of ginseng aphrodisiac) obtained from roots of tropical plants and from which are extracted chemically similar principles to those of sex hormones, so it explains so widely used in therapy. The amyl nitrite, a drug taken at one time to treat angina, may be effective as an aphrodisiac, but in this case there is no evidence for this effectiveness. Its side effects may be reflected in a significant reduction in blood pressure to dangerously low levels.

There are also a whole series of secondary and insignificant aphrodisiac effects, caused by the ingestion of some common foods such as ginger, mustard, oysters, capers, truffles, pepper, nutmeg and many others, not always really effective to stimulate sexual desire.

Testosterone as an aphrodisiac – Testosterone, the male sex hormone, is sometimes considered a strong sexual stimulant, although the effects vary widely from individual to individual. Males who have normal amounts of testosterone produce less sperm in case they are given additional doses of this hormone, while subjects who are deficient benefit from its action in terms of time to restore libido and sexual potency.

Testosterone plays several important physiological functions as an aphrodisiac and erection of the center stimulus of erotic desire, the regulation of the psychic centers, activity and the anatomy of the gonads and copulatory organs. It is used in some cases even to frigidity by women as a remedy, even if there is a risk that, at high doses, its administration may lead to excessive masculinization. It should however be noted that the products of testosterone or hormones such as gonadotrophins or antiestrogens are mostly used only in cases of androgen deficiency (poor development of the gonads) because of the many side effects that may result.
